Polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates made up of long chains of monosaccharide units. They serve various functions in living organisms, including energy storage and structural support. Here are some examples of polysaccharides: 1. **Starch**: Starch is a polysaccharide found in plants and serves as a primary energy storage molecule. It consists of a chain of glucose molecules. Foods like potatoes, rice, and grains are rich sources of starch. 2. **Glycogen**: Glycogen is the primary storage form of glucose in animals, including humans. It's stored in the liver and muscles and can be broken down to release glucose when needed for energy. 3. **Cellulose**: Cellulose is a structural polysaccharide found in the cell walls of plants. It provides rigidity and strength to plant cell walls. Humans cannot digest cellulose, but it is an essential dietary fiber. 4. **Chitin**: Chitin is found in the exoskeletons of arthropods (e.g., insects, crustaceans) and in the cell walls of fungi. It provides structural support and protection. 5. **Hyaluronic Acid**: Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide found in the connective tissues of animals, including humans. It helps maintain tissue hydration and lubrication, particularly in joints. 6. **Pectin**: Pectin is a polysaccharide found in the cell walls of fruits, especially in citrus fruits. It is used in the food industry as a gelling agent in jams and jellies. These are just a few examples of the many polysaccharides found in nature. Polysaccharides play diverse roles in biology and are essential components of our diet and the diets of various organisms.
