A clause is a grammatical term used in linguistics and grammar to describe a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. Clauses are the building blocks of sentences and can be categorized into two main types: independent clauses and dependent clauses. 1. **Independent Clause:** An independent clause, also known as a main clause, is a group of words that can stand alone as a complete sentence and express a complete thought. It contains a subject and a predicate (verb) and conveys a clear meaning. For example: - "She went to the store." - "They enjoyed the movie." 2. **Dependent Clause:** A dependent clause, also called a subordinate clause, is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought. It relies on an independent clause to form a complete sentence and provide context or additional information. For example: - "Because it was raining," (This is a dependent clause; it doesn't form a complete thought on its own.) - "They went to the store because it was raining." (Now it's a complete sentence with both an independent and a dependent clause.) Dependent clauses are often introduced by subordinating conjunctions such as "because," "although," "while," "if," "since," and "when." They add complexity and depth to sentences by providing background information, conditions, reasons, or other details. In the context of sentence structure, clauses play a crucial role in constructing meaningful sentences with various levels of complexity. Combinations of independent and dependent clauses are used to create a wide range of sentence structures and convey diverse meanings.
