The term "epidermis" refers to the outermost layer of the skin in humans and other vertebrates. It is the top layer of the skin, serving as a protective barrier between the body and the external environment. Key features of the epidermis include: 1. **Cell Layers:** The epidermis is composed of multiple layers of cells. The outermost layer consists of dead cells that continuously slough off, and the inner layers contain living cells that undergo various stages of differentiation. 2. **Keratinocytes:** The predominant cells in the epidermis are keratinocytes, which produce a tough protein called keratin. Keratin helps provide strength and waterproofing to the skin. 3. **Melanocytes:** Melanocytes are cells within the epidermis that produce the pigment melanin. Melanin contributes to skin color and provides some protection against the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. 4. **Stratum Corneum:** The outermost layer of the epidermis, called the stratum corneum, is made up of dead, flattened cells filled with keratin. This layer helps prevent water loss and protects against environmental factors. 5. **Renewal:** The epidermis undergoes a constant process of renewal, with new cells generated in the lower layers and older cells being shed from the surface. The epidermis is a vital component of the skin, providing a protective barrier against pathogens, chemicals, and environmental stressors. Its structure and functions contribute to maintaining the overall health and integrity of the skin.
