Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms, from simple single-celled organisms like bacteria to complex multicellular organisms like humans. Cells are incredibly small, often only visible under a microscope, and they are responsible for carrying out all of the functions necessary for life. Each cell is surrounded by a cell membrane, which acts as a protective barrier and controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell. Within the cell, there are many different structures and organelles that carry out specific functions. These include the nucleus, which contains genetic material and controls the cell's activities, the mitochondria, which produce energy for the cell, and the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus, which are involved in protein synthesis and processing. There are two main types of cells: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells are simpler in structure and do not have a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles. They are found in organisms such as bacteria and archaea. Eukaryotic cells, on the other hand, are more complex and have a nucleus and various organelles. They are found in organisms such as plants, animals, and fungi. Cells are the fundamental unit of life, and their study is essential to understanding the biology of all living organisms.
