    Amino-acid based hormones bind to receptors found on the plasma membrane of a target cells. Once the hormone binds to the receptor, the receptor, the receptor activates an enzyme found inside the plasma membrane. This usually initiates a biochemical pathway, eventually causing the target cells to produce the desired response.
