The inguinal canal is a passage in the abdominal wall that contains structures related to the male or female reproductive system. In males, it primarily contains the spermatic cord, and in females, the round ligament of the uterus. Here’s what’s found in the inguinal canal for each gender:
In Males:
1. Spermatic Cord: The spermatic cord contains various structures, including the vas deferens (a duct that carries sperm from the testes), arteries, veins, nerves, and lymphatic vessels. These structures are responsible for the transport of sperm from the testes to the urethra.
In Females:
1. Round Ligament of the Uterus: In females, the round ligament of the uterus runs through the inguinal canal. This ligament attaches the front part of the uterus to the labia majora, providing support to the uterus and helping maintain its position.
The inguinal canal can also become a site for hernias, where abdominal contents, such as part of the intestine, can protrude into the canal, causing various medical issues. Surgical procedures may be required to repair inguinal hernias when they occur.
