    Umar ibn al-Khattab RC (584-644 CE) was a senior companion of the Prophet Muhammad and the second caliph (leader of the Muslim community) following the Prophet’s death. He played a significant role in the early history of Islam, including during the reigns of the first two caliphs, Abu Bakr and Umar. Umar is known for his piety, simplicity, and justice, and is respected by Muslims as a model of leadership and governance. During his reign, the Islamic state expanded and many of the institutions of the caliphate were established. He was assassinated in 644 CE.
